Summer 2024 Season Prep

SEASON Prep // SUMMER 2024
Can you believe it’s been a whole year since our last update! Each year I endeavour to get better at updating the website and sending out regular newsletters. And each year time just flies by and I find myself scrambling to fit it in. But here we are, just before Christmas, with a mountain of work behind us and huge amount of anticipation for the season ahead.
So what have we been up to? Where to start?! Nick embarked on his Nuffield journey this year, spending a total of 10 weeks travelling across the world and visiting incredible farms in Brazil, North America, France, Denmark, Indonesia and Chile. We’re putting together a separate blog post where he’ll share his insights and learnings as well as what his plans are before presenting his findings in 2025.
Since his return in July, we’ve planted over 5 acres of sunflowers for our Sunflower Pick Your Own. We planted earlier this season int he hope that we can launch our season in January. The recent rain and heat has meant that everything is taking off, so we’re crossing fingers for a great sunflower season.
We’ve also planted around 1500 dahlias for more bespoke Pick Your Own events in Autumn, and 1250 perennials for future picking. We had some beehives visiting from Karl who runs Morning Penni Farm in Cape Schanck and it was amazing to see them during swarm season!
This week we harvested our garlic crop after trialling 5 new varieties. Three performed really well, but despite the dry spring, two varieties still got witches’ broom. So we won’ be keeping any seed from them. The other three did incredibly well and we’re thrilled to be saving seed for next season. We were heartened by the way the soil and the garlic responded to heavy mulching with silage, so this will be a big part of how we grow next season.
There’s so much coming up this summer, we really hope to open the gates as soon as we can to share it with you all. Make sure you’re subscribed to our newsletter to be the first to hear about ticket releases and other news.
Have a wonderful and safe Christmas.
Nick & Jay
